Tinta de verano...

...here's a bit of "summer ink", spilled on paper during another of my nocturnal sketchbook barcrawls across central Madrid. I've got a pair of literary adaptations to finish by September and a host of other projects on the burner. Hope your summer exceeds your dreams.

The poetry of Chicagoan Gwendolyn Brooks, I've admired since I was a kid... but I only became aware of her short & sweet 'Narcissa' (written before I was born, probably) about a year after completion of my graphic novel. Her description of the child, blissfully alone, is a comfortable match with how I see Narcissa. And now she's gone home for a visit.

"Everytime I think I'm out... they pull me back in!"

After a bittersweet visit to the United States, (seeing family and friends was the "sweet" part,  all the rest was Trump and the Aryan hemorrhoids that dangle from his crack)  …I returned to Madrid for (drumroll) an art exhibition!  I'll be forever grateful to Margarita Gokun Silver and Elisabeth Louy for sharing their stage with me and making our show an amazing success. I'm honored to be in the presence of such gracious and talented creators! Click on their names for links to their sites and enjoy for yourselves.  I've been filling up two sketchbooks a year since 1982, my last days as an assistant editor at Marvel Comics, after cartooning legends Marie Severin and John Romita Sr, advised me that I should draw every day if I truly wanted to improve my skills. Kindred Spirits...

The Beacon Press has some terrific Graphic Novels coming up… including Jamar Nicholas’ adaptation of Geoffrey Canada’s autobiographical FIST KNIFE STICK GUN, and Carol Burrell’s adaptation of Octavia Butler’s classic KINDRED. A call went out for artists to adapt both books and I applaud the very talented cartoonists chosen. I also took a crack at KINDRED, one of my favorite books, and I’d like to share the results with you. It was a lot of fun to try on for size, and they’re going to be beautiful books.
I can’t wait to see them.
