"Too many words..."

...he said, acknowledging respectfully his critics' most familiar complaint.
Here are some Lance Tooks press clippings from over the years, most unseen before on the web, beginning with an image from American Cinematographer Magazine, 1989... an animated Chex commercial fully painted in the style of Norman Rockwell...

New York Newsday, 1997 and the 20th anniversary of Star Wars commemorated with Tooks illustrations on bottles of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew...

New York's Amsterdam News, 2003 and a few words about the Doubleday/Random House graphic novel NARCISSA...

Black Ink, Doubleday's retailer mag devoted to African American fiction, 2002...

A typical rave from the Comics Journal, 2003...

Ideal, Spain... 2004 and the Spanish language edition of NARCISSA...

A word about the 2006 "Sistuhs on Narcissa" roundtable discussion @ the Chicago Black Age of Comics Convention (The next one's in October 2008, and I'll be at the 2009 convention)

Summertime...

...and the artist is taking a not particularly earned vacation from his learned vocation.

Here find a couple of odds and ends from various parts of the web...(click to enlarge) ...for example, from the very odd site, TOOGLE.COM... this mosaic turns up when the name Lance Tooks is entered...

...then LanceTooks with no space between...

...then TooksNarcissa (maybe Tooks narcissistic would've been more accurate)...

From the early 80's, a young Tooks appearance in an issue of Marvel Comics' WHAT IF series. (Caricature by Ron Zalme)

A cameo of my friend Narcissa, from the Eureka Fantasy Classics adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's story, Rappaccini's Daughter, done by yours truly.

Have a great, productive summer!

Another one bites the dust...

Just finished my adaptation of Studs Terkel's groundbreaking book of interviews, WORKING... and boy are my arms tired. Here find a couple of images, both finished and un, that should give you an idea of what the piece will be... or I should say, is. (It's hard to believe I'm done.) The bios are of Dolores Dante the WAITRESS, Hots Michaels the BAR PIANIST, and Bud Freeman the JAZZ SAXOPHONIST. This anthology project is being published by The New Press, for whom I hope to work again soon. Now I'm off to do a month of traveling, and to finally finish my NBM Graphic Novel ANANSI'S DREAMBOOK.

Thanks to Paul Buhle and Studs Terkel.
Yours truly, Lance Tooks

Commissioned last month for a Democrats Abroad Madrid fundraiser.

And now, for your amusement, a whole lot of recent bar sketches...
